Porté notamment en Haute-Saône, le nom est présent dans ce département depuis plusieurs siècles. En lui supposant une origine alémanique, ce qui semble attesté par un acte du XVIIe siècle, ce serait l'équivalent de l'allemand ou alsacien Steger, désignant celui qui habite un lieu-dit Steg (= passerelle, chemin). Le rapprochement avec Steiger (= mineur) est également envisageable.
